Sykes Group was recently engaged to upgrade an existing 800Kva generator control system for a major hospital in regional NSW. The hospital had nearly suffered a black out scenario when their generator and control system failed to operate during a recent power outage.

This upgrade involved the installation of a control system which could synchronize generator power with the main supply for seamless coverage to the hospital’s critical infrastructure. The control system needed to integrate with the existing local SCADA system, and the upgrade had to happen without any impact to the hospital power supply.

Additionally, a manual change over switch was supplied to allow the hospital to select between normal generator and an emergency rental backup, offering an improved power supply redundancy arrangement. As part of our extended scope solution, our team provided a full suite of commissioning and engineering drawings to support the hospital’s power supply system which had never been properly commissioned or documented.

The Sykes Group Service Support approach is to work consultatively with the client to develop the best solution. This involved conducting numerous site visits with extensive testing of the circuits and ensuring the control identifications were in place prior to any work being undertaken. Generators were supplied to support the site for the controller upgrade with a 500kva and 350Kva fully synchronized as backup for the entire process.

Our team was pleased to demonstrate to the site technicians our workmanship throughout the process as part of a collaborative effort and to facilitate a streamlined hand-over. We were thrilled to exceed our client’s expectations in both safety and efficiency, delivering a complete upgrade on schedule without any impact on the hospital power supply.

Innovative thinking underpins every aspect of Sykes Group’ operations. We strive to offer complex solutions in critical applications to all of our clients, delivering on the promise to keep our customers productive.
